We are proud to introduce the launch of a new initiative that is set to transform the future of wood usage: the Wood2Wood project.
Led by the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS), this Horizon Europe project kicked off with a gathering in Athens, Greece in February 2024, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability.
During this meeting, participants engaged in extensive discussions on circular economy principles and the valorisation of wood resources, including their own contributions towards the project objectives, and associated activities.
W2W aims to develop and validate a comprehensive framework for the multi-dimensional cascade valorisation of wood derived from Construction & Demolition and furniture waste.
This framework consists of four core components:
1) Advanced separation and sorting technologies;
2) Upcycling processes and technologies;
3) Digital tools for enhancing circular flows of secondary materials, and;
4) Supportive frameworks in policy, market, and skills.
Furthermore, W2W will demonstrate efficient and sustainable value chains in three use cases by utilising technologies and tools that enable the selection of optimal cascade paths for the reuse of wood products and materials. This holistic approach aims to reduce the demand for virgin materials, minimise landfill waste, create new value-added products from waste materials, and support the transition to a circular economy by promoting closed-loop systems where materials are continually repurposed and reused, extending their lifecycle.
The consortium, led by the Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (ICCS), comprises 25 partners from nine EU countries and one non-EU country: Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Cyprus, and South Africa.
